My Classroom Management Approach
I believe that to develop happy, independent, intelligent, and resilient students, the social curriculum is as important as the academic curriculum. In my classroom, I have adopted the Responsive Classroom approach to proactive and reactive classroom management. Please check out the Responsive Classroom website for more information.
Morning Meeting
Morning Meeting is made up of the following:
- Greeting
- Share
- Community Building Activity
- News and Announcements
Logical Consequences
I try to respond to misbehavior in a way that allows children to fix and learn from their mistakes while preserving their dignity. In our class, we follow the Responsive Classroom approach to logical consequences, responding to misbehavior in three possible modes:
- You Break it, You Fix it (Make Reparations)
- Lose a Privilege
- Take a Break
Parent Relationships
Setting the stage for positive parent relationships starts early in the school year. In the first two weeks of school, I invite families to conduct a Goal Setting Meeting during which the student and parents tell me about his/her academic and social hopes and dreams for the school year. I try my best to allow families to lead the meeting so I can learn exactly what they believe I need to know in order for the student to have a fantastic fourth grade year. In addition to hopes and dreams, families share information about experience with school (of both the parents and the child), hobbies, siblings, pets and much more! To prepare families for the goal setting meeting, I ask that they fill out the My Child as a Learner Form that they may use as an optional guide to our discussion.
As the year progresses, it is vital to our partnership that I continue to keep families abreast of the class news and announcements with my weekly newsletter, the Brown Roundup. I also encourage parents to monitor student progress by reviewing corrected work in Friday Folders. The students complete a weekly reflection on their learning which is shared with their parents over the weekend.
Also, parent volunteerism is strongly encouraged in my classroom. I provide flexible duties and times for parents to help out in and out of the classroom. Please review the volunteer request form that I send home to families each late summer/fall to recruit help.
